Peruvian Nazca Lines: What Are Nazca Lines?
Nazca lines have puzzled scientists for a long time. No one is sure of their purpose although scienitsts have made several guesses over the years. Each new generation of researchers finds a little more evidence that can be used to determine exactly what the structures were used for. Nazca lines are ancient drawings which are found all across the deserts of Central Peru. These geographical illustrations are also known as geolyphs. Geolyphs, are wide symbols on the ground which are not natural. They are man made in origin.
What are Nazca Lines? How are They Made?
The designs are made by arranging stones. They are often called wheels by archaeologists because some of them look like wheels with spokes. Some of them resemble kites while others were built as walls. Researchers theorize that the kites were used to gather and kill animals. It is thought that they are about two thousand years old. The biggest ones are over two hundred feet wide.
Drawings which are similar to Nazca lines stretch from Saudi Arabia to Syria and are hard to see when you are walking, riding or driving. However, when you are at least a hundred feet above ground level, they can be seen easily. People can appreciate the designs better when they are viewed from an airplane. Sightings of them have been recorded from as early as the 1920s, when RAF pilots flew over them. The Royal Air Force pilots who saw them were following the airmail routes.

Saudi Arabian geolyphs tend to be less circular. Some Middle Eastern structures are rectangles which have the same spokes as the Peruvian wheels. Those in Saudi Arabia that that are circular have two spokes that are set in a direction to meet the rising and setting sun.
Geolyphs are generally thought of as worship places of people who used to live in the region thousands of years before. Some of them are connected with astronomy and specific astronomical events. They are also considered as symbolic places for rituals associated with certain seasons, such as the celebration of the start of spring.
Scientists are not sure why so many of these structures are in existence. Some of them appear to be walls, but their function is not apparent. Previously it was thought that the stones are the remains of buildings that were in use many thousands of years ago however nowadays not much credence is given to this idea.
